Luxury Product Photography with Bags of Splendour

Earlier this year Perfocal worked with Bags of Splendour, headed by Marianne - a young, style loving founder with a soft spot for the finer things in life.

Marianne was educated in the heart of London, and whilst at university cultivated a nuanced taste for luxury brands. In between her studies, she would often find herself in presence of collectors at exclusive sample sales and private auctions. Through these networks and experiences Marianne learnt the fundamentals of trading luxury goods.

After university, her private passion quickly turned into a business with a cult following, which Marianne has grown by leveraging her personal networks to acquire ever rarer items.

Some of which we are proud to present below:

The Dolce & Gabbana Box Clutch

The Dolce & Gabbana Box Clutch in Green Python Snakeskin and Leather. This piece exudes luxury with an exotic leather and crystal embellished Ladybug & Bee exterior. This bag retails for approx £2600.

This was a runway piece which makes it very exclusive and therefore a collectors item. It can be worn as a clutch or as a crossbody as there is detachable chain.

Hermes Birkin Black Togo 30cm, Gold Hardware

This bag in Marianne's opinion is one of the most prized and desired luxury bags. It’s been a symbol of wealth and exclusivity for years and has established itself in popular culture. The bag featured can fetch up to £18k.

Birkin’s in general can fetch hundreds of thousands depending on factors like the year, the type of leather, exotic style, and finishing. For instance in May 2017 the infamous 30 centimetre matte-white Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Birkin with 18-carat white gold and hardware bearing 245 diamonds was sold at a Christie's auction in Hong Kong for $377,261. Creating the new record for the most expensive handbag in the world ?.

Louis Vuitton Coquelicot Kleber PM

The Louis Vuitton Coquelicot Kleber PM (RRP:£1700) is a perfect addition to any bag collection. Both sophisticated and sexy it makes perfect for the office or for dinner.  It is truly a statement piece and can transform your look instantly.

This bag comes in three different colours; Hot Pink, Coquelicot and Noir. It bares a grained cowhide Epi Leather, a smooth cowhide trim, a micro-fiber lining and silver metallic pieces. A number of different compartments in the interior makes this Louis Vuitton Signature piece practical as well as stunning.

The Product Photography

Having realised early on that "strong imagery is so important to this game [instagram e-commerce]", Marianne spent time looking for the right product photographer for her business.

"I spoke to so many photographers, but was disappointed by the poor communication and unreasonable prices. I loved that Perfocal, actually took an interest in my business needs and were transparent with their pricing."

Perfocal sent Marianne one of our London based photographers, Joseph, who has spent years developing his craft. He has an expert's eye, that goes beyond product, expanding into fashion & editorial imagery.

"Joseph's lens captured the story of each product. He was so professional and gave the products a look, that couldn't be matched by reality."

The cost of hiring a professional like Joseph for an hour? - £99.

At Perfocal we have clear product photography pricing.

Marianne paid: £358 for 4 hours of product photography with Joseph.

Her photos we shot, edited and delivered in under 48 hours.

How to take beautiful Product imagery at home (without a studio)?

These images are an example of how you can create beautiful product photography at home, without a studio or a light-box. These stunning images were taken in Marianne's home, using a two strobe lights and a touch creativity.

Upon arriving at the location, Joseph noticed Marianne had a slightly-translucent white table. With a spark of brilliance, he pushed the table against a white wall and placed one of his strobe lights beneath the table, directly under the product the light facing upwards. He then placed a second strobe light, on his right, facing the product.

Once set-up, he went to work and the output is what you see before you!

So, learning from Joseph's product photography:

Question: How do you take good product photos at home?

Step 1: Find a surface and a wall of matching colour.

Step 2: Ensure there is a colour contrast between the product and your photography background. (White works best)

Step 3: Set up multiple lights with different angles to mimic a studio lighting setup and don't be afraid to experiment! (you can find some on Amazon for under £25)

Step 4: Take photos with a quality camera - don't use your phone! (but of course we would say that ?)

Step 5: Get creative!
